Lantern can either be used as a block for decoration and light in your campsite, or as an item to light the area around you.

A Lantern can be placed op top of blocks whose top-bounds in the middle of the block extend to the top of the block. For example, Lanterns can be placed on normal cubes, fences and anvils, but not on torches, slabs and stairs. A Lantern can also be placed below a block whose bottom-bounds in the middle of the block extend to the bottom of the block. This includes: normal cubes (like leaves), fences and stairs, but not repeaters, levers and carpets. In other words, if it makes sense that the Lantern can be placed, it most of the time is so and vise versa.

A completely full lantern can burn for 750 seconds (12.5 minutes), so for a little over one Minecraft night (10 minutes). A Lanterns remaining burn time will start decreasing when it is placed and upon depletion, the Lantern will change into an Empty lantern.

When a Lantern is placed in the Camping Inventory, the area around you will be constantly lit. The remaining burn time of the Lantern, however, will decrease twice as fast as when it is placed in the world to lit on location (it is caused by the wind ;) ). When the fuel is depleted the Lantern will change into a Empty Lantern and it needs to be refilled.

Empty Lanterns are mostly acquired by using up a Lantern, it is however also possible to craft them.

Empty Lanterns do not give any light.

Empty Lanterns can be refilled with glowstone dust.
